The Bangor GOP Committee will host a republican gubernatorial candidate forum at 5:30pm - 7:30pm, Wednesday October 28th at the Dyke Center for Family Business on the campus of Husson University.

Confirmed to attend are:

State Chairman Charlie Webster will open the forum with an address to the room on the latest news regarding the People's Veto effort and the Secretary of State's office.

The candidates will each have the opportunity to present an opening introduction and then be presented with three questions, then audience questions, followed by closing statements.

Cards will be presented to the audience for questions to be submitted.

The event will be moderated by a politically independent, LEED certified landscape architect Steven Ribble from Bangor.

The event is free to the public and donations for the Bangor GOP committee will be accepted.

You've heard good news travels fast - well how fast does bad news travel?
Well - let's take a look.

With our state in the midst of an economic disaster, our legislators are doing what they can to make sure the tourists that we may rely on for a financial shot in the arm have plenty to talk about.

LD 114 sponsored by Rep. Anne Perry (D) Calais and it's intention is to make overnight parking of RV's in public parking lots illegal.

The Portland Press Herald reported on Sunday: "She wants RVers to feel welcome in Maine, she said. But if RVers avoid the state because they aren't allowed to park for free, that's not a great loss."

RVTravel.com, and online resource for RV owners in the US and Canada has already posted a commentary urging RV owners to contact a number of folks and voice their collective discontent with the proposed bill.

Isn't it time that we pay attention to the financial state of the state and make some moves to get us in the right direction? Is this really a good time to offend a large population of folks with disposable income?

The State's Fiscal Issues

On Friday morning, the Governor will present his plan to the Maine State legislature regarding the $129 million revenue shortfall in the '09 budget and the overall $570 million revenue shortfall through the '11 budget.

The discussion so far has been what programs will get cut and where will the people suffer because of it.

To me, the answer is bigger than chopping off a budget line item and calling it good.

It's about overall efficiency and attention to what gets done within those budget line items.

Simply put - I think the answer to the State of ME's fiscal issues is not "what programs we trim" but "where to trim w/in the program" to ensure it stays viable.

Clearly there is a problem without a direct solution. As unemployment continues to rise and the needs of the people grow with it, there are essential services that are designed for those in need.

The state is in need of economic engines that help create new jobs as well as lay the foundation for growth in sectors of opportunity.

These are parallel conversations and should not be discussed as one or the other. We can cut and grow at the same time.

The Governor's proposal will address the immediate and not the long term issues of a broken system.

However, it's a good start but we must be smarter than that to be better in the long run. But we must do it with clear goals and open communication and not use tactics to push agendas.

Why must we resort to scare tactics and say that budget cuts will bring more sick, more hungry and more homeless? Why can't we say that the sick, hungry and homeless will benefit from these actions as we're making strategic cuts to ensure the programs that are most deserving survive in good economic times as well as bad.

There are smart people working in state government. But they are handcuffed by protocols, procedures, status quo and an environment that does not promote efficiency but rather measures success by how well the money is spent and not how wisely it is spent.

They say the light bulb does not cause the roach problem - it only shows you where they are.

Well the light bulb is bright and it's time to go to work.

As you may be aware, I have been appearing 2x month on the George Hale / Ric Tyler show along with Rep. Emily Cain (D), Orono to discuss local politics and the state of our state. The 7 worst states to start a business

U.S. News & World Report yesterday posted an article on its website called, "The 7 worst states to start a business." It placed Maine at No. 4, citing its high property, personal income and individual capital gains taxes. But it did say that Maine is a prosperous state compared to some. "Relative economic prosperity, however, does not necessarily mean a state is a good one in which to start a business. That's because, while not poor, Maine's economy is not dynamic either."
